The San Diego Union Tribune reports the “National ‘village’ concept for aging in place is catching on in San Diego.” Is this form of retirement housing a solution to aging-in-place everywhere? Perhaps…but likely limited to early retirement, before mobility and the need for higher level of care is required.
“If you’re planning to stay in your home and your community, and you connect with those of like mind, it will work.” …at least for a time.
“Between 2010 and 2040, we predict the nation’s 65-plus population will grow by roughly 90 percent,” says Hamilton Lombard, a demographics researcher for the University of Virginia. “In some areas of the country, most of the population growth will come from retirees.” This ballooning number of seniors will impact industries as diverse as healthcare, technology, and, especially, real estate, as changing expectations around retirement mean new challenges and opportunities for developers.
Here are some of the trends – many overlapping, some contradictory – shaping how this generation will spend its golden years, demonstrating that older Americans, like millennials, are far from homogenous.
Happiness is like jam. You can’t spread even a little without getting some on yourself.
Give yourself permission to live a big life. Step into who you were meant to be. Stop playing small. You were meant for greater things.
Adopt a traveler’s mindset for life. Carry only what you need for the journey
The secret to downsizing? Free yourself from the burdens of too much stuff and responsibilities for maintenance. Do it while you have the time and energy to direct the downsizing. Then enjoy the resulting freedom.
